Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics started in 1939 as Timely Comics with the aptly titled "Marvel Comics." Timely Comics was founded by Martin Goodman who previously published western themed pulp magazines throughout the 1930's. Marvel Comics #1 featured The Human Torch (created by Carl Burgos) and Namor the Sub-Mariner, created by Bill Everett. In 1941, Jack Kirby partnered with Joe Simon to created Captain America.
Later, in 1951, Timely (and many spin-off labels) became Atlas Comics. Atlas comic books included all of the popular genres including westerns, romance, crime and Super-Heroes. Marvel Comics emerged in 1961, publishing The Fantastic Four, Marvel's first super-hero team (rivaling the success of the Justice League from DC Comics). Amazing Adventures issue 3 was the very first comic to carry the Marvel Name (actually "MC") and preceded the Fantastic Four by several months. Stan Lee was the Editor in Chief and a primary force behind the success of Marvel throughout the Silver era. Many of Marvel's biggest comic characters emerged including The Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man and the X-Men comic series. Modern Marvel Comics include all of the great super-hero characters created during the early years, generating many highly collectible comics during the way. Marvel Comics current Editor in Chief is Joe Quesada. Of course, Marvel characters are portrayed in larger then life movies, TV shows, theme park attractions, and so many aspects of modern life.
